CANopen absolute encoders from POSITAL with extended functions
CANopen absolute encoders with extended functions
POSITAL now provides revised versions of its OPTOCODE line of optical absolute encoders with a CANopen interface. One new feature of the CA series is a shorter housing – measuring merely 71 mm, it makes the encoders suitable for use in applications with limited installation space. Another new feature is a bootloader which facilitates remote maintenance and allows users to execute software updates via the CANbus and to update device profiles. Users can also configure the new devices via LSS (Layer Setting Service), which makes it possible to retroactively assign node number and Baud rate via software. A software add-on ensures real-time calculation of speed and acceleration; it enables CPU load distribution in time-critical applications, thus relieving the central control unit. Moreover, the encoders’ CANopen interface supports the J1939 network protocol, allowing users to install them in mobile machines such as utility vehicles without any need for gateway solutions. In all models, node number and Baud rate (20 kBaud to 1 MBaud) can be easily adjusted via SDO telegrams. Additionally, preset value, resolution and limit switch parameters can be configured via the CANbus and stored in the non-volatile EEPROM.
Like all OPTOCODE encoders, the new CA models use a tried and tested op-toelectronic scanning method to record position values. The single-turn part provides a resolution of 16 bit per revolution. Multi-turn units register a maxi-mum of 16,384 revolutions (14 bit), thereby covering an overall measuring range of 30 bit. In addition to the established models with a solid or recessed hollow shaft, CA encoders are also available as through hollow shaft versions which allow for optimal mechanical integration. User-friendly configuration is ensured by an optional connection cap which features a switchable terminating resistor, an integrated T-coupler, diagnosis LEDs and BCD switches for manual adjustment of the Baud rate. Furthermore, IP66/67 protected heavy duty models with a special encapsulated housing are available for use in rugged environments.
